What Is The Essence of Yoga?
Many people these days are looking for the essence of living a yogic lifestyle. There are many definitions of essence, but for the context of this blog essence signifies the best virtues, characteristics, or features of something.
I see more people everyday wanting to empower themselves with the most significant qualities of yoga. To find the essence of yoga you must practice; take time everyday for movement, breath, visualization, meditation, and most importantly savasana. But if you only have time for one yogic practice, it’s breath that is the ultimate link in creating union amongst mind, body, and heart. It is in the union that we find the true essence of yoga.
“The essence of yoga is the breath.
Follow the breath to relaxation.
The breath is the constant companion.
The breath becomes a way of flowing and becoming presence.
Using the breath to cultivate conscious relaxation.
There is no breath not worth breathing.”
~ Janice Clarefield
The essence of yoga can be found in conscious breath work. Here are a couple practices that will support you in stepping into your true essence:
1) Full body yogic breathing is how we were born to breath. This breath exercise will support you in reclaiming space you deserve. Find a comfortable seat and close your eyes. Begin to notice your breath without judging it. Start to visualize your breath orbiting around your heart, like a beautiful velvet ribbon caressing your inner body landscape. Take a few breaths here. Now begin to visualize your breath orbiting around your belly, as you inhale your belly rises and expands in all directions and as you exhale your
belly relaxes. Now let go of your breath and return to your natural breath.
2) Bhramari breath is a practice that creates a strong vibration that begins in the mouth and resonates throughout the body. This breath exercise supports the energetic matrix that is found deep below the skin to accept, process, and transmit energy. Find a comfortable seat and close your eyes. Take an inhale breath through your nose and an audible exhale breath out your mouth. Inhale to begin and then as you exhale create a buzzing sound with your mouth. Repeat for one minute.
Yoga captures the essence of living a beautiful life.
